Film Screening and Discussion: The Shop on Main Street

"The Shop on Main Street" (Czechoslovakia, 1965) explores how Jewish and non-Jewish neighbors responded to the Holocaust in Slovakia. It is a challenging and touching study of humanity and morality in crisis. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1966. It is in Slovak and Yiddish with English subtitles.

Dr. Jacob Ari Labendz will lead a discussion following the screening, touching on the Holocaust in Slovakia and the unique role of that tragedy as a theme of 1960s Czechoslovak cinema. Dr. Labendz directs YSU's Center for Judaic and Holocaust Studies and is a scholar of Jewish and Czechoslovak history.
